The Frustrating Reality of Shared Photos

You receive a great photo of your grandkids. You want to print it for your wall. You take it to the pharmacy, order an 8x10, and... it's blurry. Pixelated. Disappointing. (If you're sharing with grandparents, this is especially frustrating.)

What happened? The photo looked fine on your phone. But when you try to print it larger, you discover it was compressed along the way. The original might have been several megabytes; what you received was a fraction of that.

Common Compression Culprits

  • Text messages (SMS/MMS): Carriers compress to save bandwidth
  • Social media: Facebook, Instagram resize and compress
  • Email: Often compressed, especially by Gmail on mobile
  • Messaging apps: WhatsApp, Messenger reduce quality

Photo Resolution for Print Sizes

For sharp prints, you need roughly 300 pixels per inch (PPI). Here's what that means for common print sizes:

Print SizeMinimum ResolutionMegapixels
4 x 6" (wallet/small)1200 x 18002.2 MP
5 x 7"1500 x 21003.2 MP
8 x 10"2400 x 30007.2 MP
11 x 14"3300 x 420013.9 MP
16 x 20" (wall art)4800 x 600028.8 MP
24 x 36" (poster)7200 x 1080077.8 MP

Good news: Most modern smartphones take 12-48 megapixel photos - plenty for most print sizes if the photo isn't compressed during sharing. With eCards Photos, recipients can also keep the entire card forever.

How eCards Photos Preserves Full Quality

When you create a card with eCards Photos, photos under 5MB are stored exactly as you uploaded them - no compression, no resizing. For larger photos, our smart optimization preserves maximum quality within the 5MB limit. Either way, recipients download exactly what we stored - print-ready photos.

What Happens When Your Photo Is Too Large

Most phones today take photos well over 5MB - sometimes 10MB or more. When you upload a photo that exceeds our 5MB per-photo limit, we don't just reject it or crush it down to a tiny file. Instead, our smart optimization system works to preserve as much quality as possible.

How Our Smart Optimization Works

1

Photos under 5MB? Uploaded unchanged.

No compression, no resizing - exactly what you uploaded.

2

Photos over 5MB? Quality reduction first.

We start at 95% JPEG quality and work down to 75% - keeping every pixel.

3

Still too large? Then we resize.

Only if quality reduction alone won't fit do we reduce dimensions - protecting enough pixels for sharp 8x10 prints.

The goal is simple: maximum quality within the 5MB limit. Unlike services that blindly shrink everything to 1200 pixels, we preserve your resolution whenever possible. A slight reduction in JPEG quality (invisible to most eyes) is far better than losing half your pixels.

How to Read the Print Quality Badge

After optimization, we show you a print quality badge so you know exactly what to expect when printing. No guessing, no surprises at the print shop.

✓ 8x10+Excellent

Great for 8x10" prints and larger. Frame-worthy quality for wall art.

✓ 5x7Good

Great for 5x7" prints. Perfect for desk frames and photo albums.

ℹ 4x6Standard

Great for 4x6" prints. The classic photo size for wallets and refrigerators.

ℹ ScreenScreen Only

Best for viewing on screens. Small prints may look soft.

We also show the DPI (dots per inch) at the relevant print size - for example, "285 DPI @ 8x10" means your photo will print at 285 dots per inch at that size. Anything over 200 DPI looks sharp; 300 DPI is professional quality.

Why This Matters

Typical Photo Sharing

8 MB photo from your iPhone gets crushed to 200 KB. You end up with a 1200x900 pixel image that looks fine on a phone but prints blurry at anything larger than 4x6.

eCards Photos

Same 8 MB photo optimized to 4.9 MB - keeping all 4000x3000 pixels. Slight JPEG quality reduction (invisible to the eye), but you can print a sharp 8x10 or larger.

How to Download Photos for Printing

1

Open the Card

Click the link you received. The card opens in your browser - no app or account needed.

2

View the Photos

Click the card to open it. Photos will appear - tap or click to view them full size.

3

Download Individual Photos

Each photo has a download button. Tap it to save the full-resolution image to your device. On phones, it saves to your Photos/Camera Roll.

4

Print Anywhere

Take your downloaded photos to any print service: Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Costco, Shutterfly, or print at home. Upload the file and choose your size.

Tips for the Best Prints

  • Check the file size: For 8x10 prints, the downloaded file should be at least 1-2 MB. Under 500 KB might print blurry.
  • Use original upload: If you're the sender, upload your highest quality photos. Don't screenshot or download from social media.
  • Match aspect ratio: Crop your photos to match standard print sizes (4:6, 8:10) before uploading to avoid unwanted cropping at print time.
  • Start smaller: If unsure about quality, order a 4x6 first. If it looks sharp, you can confidently order larger sizes.
  • Check the print badge: After uploading, look for the green 8x10+ or 5x7 badge. If you see "Screen" in amber, the photo may print soft at larger sizes - consider using a higher resolution original.

Common Questions

What resolution are the downloaded photos?

Photos download at the resolution you uploaded (or the optimized resolution if your original exceeded 5 MB). We show a print quality badge after upload so you know exactly what sizes will print sharply. Our optimization prioritizes keeping pixels over aggressive compression.

What's the best photo size for printing?

Bigger prints need more pixels: 4x6 prints need at least 1200x1800 pixels (2.2 MP). 8x10 prints need 2400x3000 pixels (7.2 MP). Wall art at 16x20 needs 4800x6000 pixels (28.8 MP). Most phone photos easily cover small to medium prints.

Can I print at places like Walgreens or CVS?

Yes! Download the photo to your phone or computer, then upload it to any photo printing service - Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Costco, Shutterfly, or use your home printer.

Why do photos from text messages print blurry?

Phone carriers compress images sent via SMS/MMS to save bandwidth, often reducing a sharp photo to a tiny fraction of its original quality. eCards Photos preserves your uploaded resolution.

What if my photo is larger than 5 MB?

We automatically optimize it to fit within the 5 MB limit while preserving as much quality as possible. Our system reduces JPEG quality first (imperceptible to most eyes) before reducing pixel dimensions. After optimization, you'll see a print quality badge showing what print sizes will look sharp.
